Argentina vs Egypt: La Albiceleste face the Pharaohs in knockout classic

World champions Argentina meet Mohamed Salah's Egypt in a heavyweight knockout tie — Scaloni's side eye another step toward a fourth star.

It is the knockout tie nobody saw coming and everyone now wants to watch.

Argentina, the reigning world champions, arrive at the round of 16 unbeaten, riding three controlled group-stage performances built on a settled spine: Emi Martínez behind, Cuti Romero and Lisandro Martínez in front of him, and the relentless midfield engine of De Paul, Mac Allister and Enzo Fernández. In attack, Julián Álvarez has already three goals to his name, and Lionel Messi — still, somehow, the conductor — has turned 39 into a vintage of cold, surgical creativity.

Egypt, the Pharaohs, are the surprise of the bracket. Hossam Hassan's side topped a brutal group on the back of Mohamed Salah's talisman performances and a defensive identity that has conceded just once in three matches. Their counter-press is sharp, their transitions vertical, and their belief — after a 2-1 win over a fancied European side in the final group game — is at a tournament high.

The tactical chess will be fascinating. Scaloni is expected to keep faith with the 4-3-3 that has been Argentina's default for two years, but the temptation to deploy Paredes as a single pivot and free Mac Allister and Enzo into the half-spaces is real. Egypt will look to compress the middle, push Salah into the channels behind Argentina's full-backs, and turn the match into a series of restarts.

"It's a different kind of test," Scaloni said in his press conference. "Egypt have weapons — Salah is one of the great players of his generation — and we have to be Argentina. Patient, brave, together."

Kick-off is at the Lusail Stadium. The forecast is clear. The winner books a quarter-final against the survivor of France–Morocco. Three stars on the badge; one more knockout to navigate.
